WA Government Japanese Studies Scholarships
The Department of Education Services manages two Scholarships, the Western Australian Japanese Studies Scholarship and the Western Australian/Hyogo Prefecture Japanese Studies Scholarship. These two scholarships are awarded each year to promising young students or graduates who have training and or experience in a professional discipline, as well as an understanding of the Japanese language. The scholarships provide students with the opportunity to spend up to one year studying at a tertiary institution in Japan.
The long-term goal is for recipients to develop contacts and strengthen professional ties between Japan and Western Australia in ways that will benefit the State. The scholarship includes a return airfare, an initial payment of $3,000 for fees and other expenses and a monthly maintenance allowance of 226,600 Yen.
Applications for the Scholarships close in July of each year and interviews are held in August. Applicants are encouraged to discuss a study plan with their institution and seek guidance on appropriate Japanese university exchange programs. Guidelines, application forms and selection criteria are provided below.

Miri Scholarships
The Directorate also supports scholarships for five students from the Accounting and Finance and Engineering faculties at Curtin University’s Miri Campus in Sarawak. The winners are able to complete the final year of their course at Bentley. The scholarships, while based on academic excellence, emphasise an ambassadorial role for improving relationships between Sarawak and Western Australia. Miri students need to apply through their student services office.
Aboriginal Leadership Scholarships
The Higher Education Directorate funds the Premier’s Indigenous Leaders Scholarships/Fellowships Scheme for research projects through Curtin University’s Centre for Aboriginal Studies. This has been established to enable two outstanding Indigenous Leaders to engage in scholarly activities that enhance their own professional development as well as providing academic forums through which they can share their knowledge and experience. More information is available via the Curtin University’s Centre for Aboriginal Studies website or the Curtin Scholarships Office.
