Review of the WACOT Act

Project Background

The Western Australian College of Teaching (WACOT) was established under the provisions of the Western Australian College of Teaching Act 2004 which commenced on 15 September 2004.

Under s 90 of the WACOT Act, the responsible Minister is obliged to carry out a review of that Act, as soon as practicable, after the expiration of 4 years from its commencement.

In November 2008, the Minister for Education, the Hon Dr Elizabeth Constable MLA commissioned the Department of Education Services to undertake the Review on her behalf. The Minister set the following terms of reference for the review:

Consultation

Consultation with respect to this review has three key elements:

  1. Interviews with key stakeholders.
  2. A published discussion paper coupled with a call for submissions (outlined below).
  3. A survey of a stratified sample of teachers registered with WACOT.  It is intended that this survey be undertaken in March-May 2009.

The review will also involve an examination of the legislation of comparable bodies in Australasia.

Discussion Paper

A copy of the discussion paper prepared for the purposes of the review may be viewed here:
